Brazil Boosts Imports of Vinyl Resin to Meet Demand

SAO PAULO, Brazil, Aug. 13, 2008 (VNS) – Consumption of vinyl resin in Brazil will increase 10% in 2008 over 2007, surpassing domestic capacities, and necessitating the import of 100,000 tons of resin in 2008, according to a statement by Brazil's Instituto do PVC.

Total consumption of vinyl resin in Brazil for 2008 will reach an estimated 900,000 tons.  Reasons for the increased demand can be attributed to Brazil's prosperous automobile industry, and the increase in "civil construction" such as infrastructure and sanitation projects, with PVC more economical than alternative materials.

According to Miguel Bahiense, executive director of Instituto do PVC, the federal government's Growth Acceleration Program (PAC) is responsible for increased demand.  He states, "Vinyl is the main plastic of civil construction, and with the PAC it will be the product that will benefit the most."

Brazil's major domestic PVC resin manufacturers have taken steps to increase production over the next few years.

Vinyl’s a Hit at New York Fashion Week
NEW YORK CITY, May 2, 2007 (VNS) – Coco Chanel once said every woman needs a little black dress. These days, that little black dress might be made of vinyl. Designer Cynthia Rowley introduced one for Spring 2007 during the prestigious New York Fashion week. Narciso Rodriguez (who designed Caroline Bissett’s wedding gown for her marriage to John Kennedy, Jr.) weighed in with a black PVC coat. Meanwhile, Prada and Gianfranco Ferre lit up their vinyl palettes with men’s shorts, jackets, and coats in shiny solids of red, yellow, orange, and blue.
